Volume of exports and of imports increased in December

Growth of exports volume 3.8 per cent and of imports volume 2.9 per cent in 2025

The value of Finnish exports of goods increased by 0.9 per cent year-on-year in December, according to the international trade in goods statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was EUR 6.1 billion. Export volume increased by 0.5 per cent and export prices declined by 0.2 per cent year-on-year. The value of imports increased by 0.4 per cent in December to EUR 6.2 billion. Import prices declined by 3.0 per cent and import volume increased by 5.6 per cent compared to December 2024.

In 2025, the total value of exports increased by 3.1 per cent and the value of imports by 0.5 per cent. Change of export volume during the latest 12 months was +3.8 per cent (12-month moving average January 2025 – December 2025). The corresponding figure for import volume was +2.9 per cent.

In December 2025, the trade balance showed a deficit of EUR 190 million. In 2025, the trade balance had accumulated a deficit of EUR 848 million. The aggregate trade surplus by commodity group increased for industrial machinery and equipment and mechanical forest industry products. The deficit increased for ores and metal scrap, chemicals and related products, foods and beverages and electrical machinery and equipment, but decreased for crude oil and refined petroleum products.

The terms of trade improved in December compared to the corresponding month of 2024 as import prices decreased more rapidly than export prices. The point figure in December was 102.2, while it was 99.4 in December 2024. The terms of trade improved also from November 2025.

Value of exports of capital goods increased in December

The value of exports of industrial supplies declined by 1.9 per cent in December. The value of exports of capital goods increased by 15.7 per cent year-on-year. The value of exports of fuels and lubricants increased by 11.6 per cent. The value of exports of consumer goods decreased by 14.9 per cent but the value of exports of food and beverages increased by 16.3 per cent. The value of exports of transport equipment and parts declined by 33.8 per cent.

The value of imports of industrial supplies increased by 5.6 per cent in December, and the value of imports of capital goods increased by 16.2 per cent year-on-year. The value of imports of transportation equipment and their parts declined by 29.8 per cent. The value of imports of fuels and lubricants decreased by 11.6 per cent. The value of imports of food and beverages increased by 16.9 per cent, and the value of imports of consumer goods increased by 4.9 per cent.

Exports to EU countries decreased, exports to countries outside the EU increased in December

The value of exports to EU member states decreased by 7.5 per cent, and exports to other countries grew by 12.5 per cent in December. Imports from EU countries decreased by 1.7 per cent, but imports from non-EU countries increased by 3.3 per cent in December. In 2025, total value of exports to EU countries increased by 0.1 per cent and exports to countries outside the EU by 7.3 per cent. In the same period, import value from EU countries increased by 0.3 per cent, and increased from countries outside the EU by 0.7 per cent.
