Description
The statistics describe the trade between Finland and other EU Member States and between Finland and third countries i.e. internal and external trade, according to ownership and size categories of enterprises, and the concentration of international trade in goods.

The statistics indicate the values of import and export of Finland
- quarterly and annually, according to the size categories of enterprises
- annually, according to the ownership of enterprises
- annually, the concentration of Finnish imports and exports
Information is summed according to industries (NACE) and products by activities (CPA). Information on concentration of the Finnish import and export is also presented by trading partners and geographical zones.
Data collecting method
The information on Finlands trade with other EU countries is collected from statistical declarations submitted by companies, using the Intrastat system of internal trade. Information on the trade between Finland and Third Countries is obtained from customs declarations which have to be submitted for every import and export consignment. The data on both internal and external trade are combined when compiling the Finnish international trade statistics.
The data on the size categories and types of enterprises have been obtained from the material of the Statistics Finland. This material is extended annually to the disposal of the Statistics of the Finnish Customs on the basis of a cooperation agreement.
Applied classifications
The product classification applied in the statistics is the CPA product classification of the EU (Commission Regulation (EU) No 1209/2014). The CPA classification describes the structure of export and import by product categories according to activities (Classification of Products by Activities CPA). Data complying with the CPA 2015 are deduced from the Combined Nomenclature CN.
The classification on industries applied in the statistics is the Nomenclature générale des Activités économiques dans les Communautés européennes (NACE/TOL2008), the classification of economic activities of the European Community. The NACE category title of each enterprise is formed according to its main branch.
The country classification is based on the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1470 on the nomenclature of countries and territories for the European statistics on international trade in goods and on the geographical breakdown for other business statistics. The country codes comply with those of the ISO 3166 standard of the International Organization for Standardization.

Completion or publication date
The quarterly statistics according to the size categories of enterprises is published not later than three months after the expiry of the quarter to which the statistics refer. The annual statistics is published within six months of the end of the statistical year. The release calendar is available on the Finnish Customs website.
Time series
Information of the international trade in goods according to the size categories of enterprises exist since 2002. Information of the concentration of international trade in goods is available from the year 2004 onwards. The data for 2004–2007 were published in an independent statistics, but from 2008 onwards as part of the publication “Tavaroiden ulkomaankauppa yritystyypeittäin” (International trade in goods by type of enterprise), only in Finnish. Data is published also in the Uljas database, which is available also in English.
