Export volume increased by 17.7 per cent in March according to preliminary data, strikes during the reference month had an impact on the percentage change

According to the preliminary statistics of international trade in goods provided by Finnish Customs, the value of Finnish exports increased by 18.1 per cent in March year-on-year. The value of Finnish exports in March was EUR 5.6 billion. Export volume increased by 17.7 per cent and export prices by 1.0 per cent year-on-year.

The value of imports increased by 13.3 per cent in March and was EUR 6.5 billion. Import prices increased by 0.4 per cent and import volume by 16.6 per cent compared to March 2024.

Because of strikes in March 2024 the export and import values in reference month were exceptional low causing high percentage change figures in March 2025. Compared to February 2025 export value declined slightly and import value grew less in March 2025 than the year-on-year change.

In January-March 2025, the aggregated value of exports increased by 6.6 per cent, and the value of imports increased by 1.8 per cent year-on-year. Change of export volume during the latest 12 months was +1.1 per cent (12 month moving average April 2024 – March 2025). The corresponding figure for import volume was +0.2 per cent.

The trade balance was in deficit of EUR 890 million in March. In January-March, the aggregated deficit amounted to EUR 1.3 billion. In March 2024, the trade balance was EUR 990 million in deficit and in January-March of the same year, the aggregated deficit was EUR 2.0 billion.

The volume of both internal and external exports increased in March

Value of exports to EU member states increased by 20.5 per cent, and to non-EU countries by 13.5 per cent in March compared to the same month the previous year. The volume of exports to EU countries increased by 21.5 per cent and to non-EU countries by 10.3 per cent during the same time.

Calculated from the beginning of the year, value of exports to EU countries increased by 8.2 per cent and to non-EU countries by 4.3 per cent. The volume of exports to EU member states increased by 5.4 per cent, and the volume of exports to non-EU countries decreased by 5.8 per cent calculated according to 12-month moving average.

Value of imports from EU countries increased by 11.4 per cent and from non-EU countries by 16.0 per cent in March. The volume of imports from EU member states increased by 12.1 per cent and from non-EU countries by 20.4 per cent.

Calculated from the beginning of the year, value of imports from EU member states increased by 4.0 per, but decreased from other countries by 1.3 per cent. The volume of imports from EU member states increased by 1.7 per cent, but the volume of imports from non-EU countries decreased by 0.3 per cent calculated according to 12-month moving average.

In this publication preliminary statistics under table 6 are listed export and import values and percentage change by country. The values in the table are preliminary and significant changes are possible when data becomes more complete.

The monthly preliminary statistics release contains preliminary overall figures about Finland's international trade in goods. More precise figures of exports and imports as well as detailed statistics about specific countries and goods will be published at the end of the month in the monthly statistical release.
