Volume of exports decreased 1.2 percent and volume of imports increased 9.3 per cent in January

The value of Finnish exports of goods increased 3.7 per cent year-on-year in January, according to the international trade in goods statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was EUR 5.9 billion. Export volume decreased by 1.2 per cent and export prices increased by 5.0 per cent year-on-year.

The value of imports increased by 8.5 per cent in January to EUR 6.4 billion. Import prices declined by 3.1 per cent and import volume increased by 9.3 per cent compared to January 2025.

In January 2026, the trade balance showed a deficit of EUR 557 million. The aggregated trade surplus by commodity group for products of industrial machinery and equipment increased compared to the previous year. Trade surplus decreased for chemical forest industry and metals. The deficit increased for ores and metal scrap, electrical machinery and equipment, as well as for food and beverages. The deficit decreased for crude oil and refined petroleum products and transport equipment.

The terms of trade improved in January compared to the corresponding month of 2025 as import prices declined and export prices increased. The point figure in January was 105.1, while it was 97.0 in January 2025. The terms of trade improved also from December 2025.

Imports from EU member states are compiled with data collected with a new method starting in January 2026. Other EU-countries data on exports to Finland is used in imports compilation. Only total values of imports are comparable with the year 2025. Finnish Customs will not publish any other yearly percentage change figures of imports during the statistical year 2026. The unit cost- and volume indices of international trade in goods are calculated according to the new data collection method, the percentage chances are comparable. Value of exports of capital goods increased in January

The value of exports of capital goods increased by 6.2 per cent in January. The value of exports of industrial supplies decreased by 7.1 per cent year-on-year. The value of exports of fuels and lubricants increased by 9.2 per cent. The value of exports of consumer goods increased by 114.6 per cent and the value of exports of transport equipment and parts by 25.6 percent. The value of exports of food and beverages decreased by 7.4 percent.

Exports to EU countries decreased in January

The volume of exports to EU member states decreased by 4.4 per cent, but the exports to other countries increased by 6.5 per cent in January. The volume of imports from EU member states increased by 3.8 per cent and from other countries by 16.0 per cent.
