Volume of exports increased 5.0 percent, volume of imports decreased 0.4 in December

The value of Finnish exports of goods increased by 5.9 per cent year-on-year in December, according to the international trade in goods statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was EUR 6.0 billion. Export volume increased by 5.0 per cent and export prices by 1.6 per cent year-on-year.

The value of imports decreased by 2.0 per cent in December to EUR 6.1 billion. Import prices increased by 0.5 per cent and import volume decreased by 0.4 per cent compared to December 2023. In 2024, the total value of exports decreased by 5.4 per cent and the value of imports by 3.3 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Change of export volume during year 2024 was -3.5 per cent (12-month moving average January 2024 – December 2024). The corresponding figure for import volume was -2.8 per cent.

In December 2024, the trade balance showed a deficit of EUR 59 million. In 2024, the trade balance had accumulated a deficit of EUR 2.1 billion. The aggregated trade surplus by commodity group for products of chemical forest industry, industrial machinery and equipment and metals decreased compared to the previous year, but increased for mechanical forest industry products. The deficit increased for crude oil and refined petroleum products and transport equipment, but decreased for ores and metal scrap.

The terms of trade improved in December compared to the corresponding month of 2023 as export prices increased more than import prices. The point figure in December was 99.4, while it was 98.3 in December 2023. The terms of trade declined from November 2024.

Value of exports of industrial supplies increased in December

The value of exports of capital goods decreased by 0.8 per cent in December, but the value of exports of industrial supplies increased by 2.6 per cent year-on-year. The value of exports of fuels and lubricants decreased by 15.5 per cent. The value of exports of consumer goods increased by 94.9 per, and the value of exports of food and beverages increased by 5.1 per cent. The value of exports of transport equipment and parts increased by 36.2 per cent.

The value of imports of industrial supplies increased by 9.2 per cent in December, and the value of imports of capital goods decreased by 5.5 per cent year-on-year. The value of imports of transportation equipment and their parts decreased by 11.5 per cent. The value of imports of fuels and lubricants decreased by 14.2 per cent. The value of imports of food and beverages increased by 4.0 per cent, and the value of imports of consumer goods increased by 0.5 per cent.

Exports to EU countries increased in December

The value of exports to EU member states increased by 7.2 per cent, and the exports to other countries by 4.2 per cent in December. Imports from EU countries increased by 5.2 per cent, but imports from outside the EU decreased by 10.3 per cent in December. In 2024, total exports to EU countries declined by 3.1 per cent and exports to outside the EU by 8.5 per cent. In the same period, imports from EU countries decreased by 2.3 per cent and from outside the EU by 4.8 per cent.
